Monumento a la Cultura
The “Monument to the Culture of San Pedro de Macorís,” designed and built by architect José Ignacio Morales, was inaugurated on December 16, 2006, by the Municipal Council. This impressive metal structure features a framework of four triple curved bars joined to smaller ones, topped by a dome under which hangs a chain with the city key. The platform showcases various symbols: a locomotive representing the sugar industry’s significance, crabs symbolizing the “Series 23,” recycled statues of notable professional baseball players, the “guloyas”, and a cane cutter. The base includes a Bible, an inkwell, and a quill, symbolizing the city’s literary heritage, and is surrounded by a planter. Nearby, at the Malecón roundabout, a small square with four stepped paths leads to a marble pedestal bearing the sculpture of the renowned poet Gastón Fernando Deligne y Figueroa (1888-1913).
Visitors should come see this monument to appreciate its artistic and architectural brilliance, as well as to immerse themselves in the rich cultural history it represents. The detailed symbols on the platform offer insights into the city’s economic, social, and cultural evolution, making it a valuable educational experience. Additionally, the surrounding gardens and the nearby square provide a picturesque setting, ideal for a leisure walk. The monument not only honors the city’s past but also celebrates its contributions to literature, sports, and the arts, making it a must-visit landmark for anyone interested in the heritage of San Pedro de Macorís.
